چکیده

AasraAcr.-Embryonic oxygen consumption and organ growth were measured in the Laysan Albatross (Diomedea immutabilis). The logarithms of oxygen consumption and organ mass increased linearly with the logarithm of whole-embryo wet mass. The rate of growth of skeletal muscle and the gastro-intestinal tract exceeded that of the embryo as a whole, while the heart, lungs, brain, and eyes grew more slowly. The absence of a discernible effect of pipping of the egg on oxygen consumption and organ growth in the embryonic albatross, in contrast to a previous report for the Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Pufinm pacificus), was attributed to a different sequence of events during pipping in the two species. Received 6 July 1992, accepted I5 April 1993.

Toxaphene and other persistent organochlorine pesticides in three species of albatrosses from the north and south Pacific Ocean.

Toxaphene and other persistent organochlorine (OC) pesticides (chlordane-related compounds [sigmaCHL], DDT-related compounds [sigmaDDT], hexachlorocyclohexanes [sigmaHCH], tris(p-chloro-phenyl)methane, hexachlorobenzene, octachlorostyrene, dieldrin) were determined in fat of Laysan albatross (Diomedea immutabilis) and in fat and eggs of blackfooted albatross (Diomedea nigripes) from the central...

Necrotizing enteritis as a cause of mortality in Laysan albatross, Diomedea immutabilis, chicks on Midway Atoll, Hawaii.

A necropsy survey of Laysan albatross, Diomedea immutabilis, chicks on Midway Atoll in June 1993, 1994, and 1995 revealed 54% (21/39), 67% (49/71), and 93% (15/16), respectively, to have enteritis as the most severe pathologic finding. The lesion was limited to the ileum, ceca, and large intestine. We were unable to attribute a single infectious etiology to this lesion. Many birds with enteriti...

Lead exposure in Laysan albatross adults and chicks in Hawaii: prevalence, risk factors, and biochemical effects.

Prevalence of lead exposure and elevated tissue lead was determined in Laysan albatross (Diomedea immutabilis) in Hawaii. The relationship between lead exposure and proximity to buildings, between elevated blood lead and droopwing status, and elevated liver lead and presence of lead-containing paint chips in the proventriculus in albatross chicks was also examined. Finally, the effects of lead ...

Use of indicator chemicals to characterize the plastic fragments ingested by Laysan albatross.

Laysan albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) ingest plastic marine debris of a wide range of shape, sizes and sources. To better characterize this plastic and provide insights regarding its provenance and persistence in the environment, we developed a simple method to classify plastic fragments of unknown origin according to the resin codes used by the Society of Plastics Industry. Known plastics...

Effects of El Niño-driven changes in wind patterns on North Pacific albatrosses.

Changes to patterns of wind and ocean currents are tightly linked to climate change and have important implications for cost of travel and energy budgets in marine vertebrates. We evaluated how El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-driven wind patterns affected breeding Laysan and black-footed albatross across a decade of study. Owing to latitudinal variation in wind patterns, wind speed differed...
